A Living Memorial

Plant A Tree to Remember

Planting A Tree to Remember is a symbolic way to pay tribute to a life while taking part in a larger effort to protect and maintain the beauty of our world. For many who are grieving, this brings more comfort and sense of connection than they ever imagined. This living tribute is a gift that will last and give back for generations.

When You Gift A Tree to Remember

You become part of something bigger. We work with over 9,000 funeral homes across North America, which allows our forestry partners to conduct large-scale reforestation projects in memory of those who are no longer with us. When A Tree to Remember is gifted, a new tree is planted to revive a forest in need. As one life ends, another life begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I select the location or type of tree to be planted?

After an order is placed, we rely upon the expertise of our forestry partner to make planting decisions based on the areas of greatest need. There are many different factors that are considered when they select where trees are planted. Selecting the right tree and planting it in the right place at the right time of year are essential to ensuring your tree will thrive, especially once fully grown.

With our new forestry partner, Arbor Day, we have expanded the number of planting locations which will impact the frequency of planting, varieties of trees planted, and global presence to countries of cultural or religious significance such as Israel. We are evaluating the ability to allow such customization to the purchaser.

  • When will the memorial tree be planted?

We have worked with our new forestry partner, Arbor Day, to determine which projects we will support for the year. A diverse selection of planting projects was designated with consideration to the valued Partners we support by maximizing regional coverage, locations of cultural importance in addition to an increased planting season.  In most of the US, planting happens almost year round, and in Canada planting occurs from spring to fall.

  • What type of tree will be planted?

The species of tree will be determined by our forestry partner based on the region. They will consider what species already grow in the area as well as what is best for the environment and maintenance of the area.

  • How do I know that my loved one’s tree will be planted?

With our new forestry partner, Arbor Day, we receive planting verifications no later than 30 days after such planting. These are supported with GPS coordinates, images of the planting site, variety of saplings planted, and even a certificate of accomplishment at the completion of the overall project. They will oversee such locations for no less than 5 years and continue to report on the impact such plantings have made on the environment and neighboring communities.

  • Who plants the memorial trees?

Our forestry partners work with their networks of planting partners throughout the world. These planting partners are typically regional conservation societies that are based closest to the region of the funeral home or the recipient’s home area.

  • Can I visit my loved one’s tree?

Once the tree has been planted, the location and more information will be emailed to the purchaser to share with the deceased’s family. Supporting information is provided on memorialtree.com so that all family, friends, and other loved ones may continue to monitor the progress and impact of such commemorative memorial trees. In some cases, the trees are planted in areas where reforestation efforts are taking place.

As such, it is not advised to try and visit the physical location of the tree as it may be difficult to identify the tree and traverse the terrain without risk of an injury occurring. In other circumstances, there may be accessible areas where rangers can direct visitors to our funded trees. Such locations will be noted on memorialtree.com where we continue to update the latest information and content to share all the progress from these loving tributes.

  • Is a memorial plaque or sign placed with the tree?

We do not have any designations of specific trees outside of the planting maps/plans provided to us by our partners.  We can tell you the specific planting project where your tribute will reside but due to the vast areas these forests comprise, it is impossible to pinpoint a specific tree.

Thanks to our new partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, we will be discussing local outreach opportunities in communities of need. We are also working to offer additional keepsakes to commemorate the memorial tree program such as engraved plaques, framed certificates, and more. Please check memorialtree.com for additional updates.

  • Is my purchase tax deductible?

Every purchase includes a receipt of the transaction. However, we are not recognized as a charitable organization and therefore unable to provide you with tax deductible receipt.
